Confidence is built when you step out of your comfort zone and into your growth zone. It’s built when you do something you once told yourself was impossible. Whether it be attending an event by yourself, saying yes to something and figuring out how to do it later, try something new, buy clothes that make you feel good and affirm yourself.
If you’re feeling a little low on confidence, this post is filled with five tips on how to boost it. Even if your mantra is ‘fake it til you make it’, you may not feel an increase in your self-confidence unless you take action.
#1 Go to an event by yourself.
While it’s nice going to events with people you know, it’s just as fun going by yourself. For introverts in particular, it forces you to get comfortable with being uncomfortable because you’ll need to speak to people you don’t know.
Pick an event that interests you and just go. It may seem scary but once you’re there, you’ll be surrounded by like-minded people.
I recently went to a speed friending event and when I purchased my ticket, I was super excited. When the night of the event arrived, I was incredibly nervous. But, once I arrived and talked to the other ladies, I started to relax and ended up having a wonderful time meeting some new people.
#2 Say yes and figure out the how later.
How many times have you talked yourself out of something because you don’t have the skills/experience or competency right now? Rather than turn down an opportunity, say yes and figure it out later.
You can gain competency as you go along. When you do something you didn’t think was possible, you build confidence in the process because you’ve just done the impossible.
You don’t need to be good to start, you just need to start. Challenge yourself and learn something new.
#3 Do something new.
It could be signing up for a dance class, lacing up your sneakers and going for a run or going to a craft class. If there’s an activity you’ve wanted to do, just go for it. If you never try, you’ll never know.
For about 3 years before I signed up for my first yoga class, it was something I wanted to try. Fear and a lack of confidence held me back. I thought that to be a yogi, you needed to be super flexible and master every pose. Little did I know, it’s a personal practice and the only person you compete with is yourself. It’s about reconnecting with yourself, tuning in to your body and noticing how you feel.
By signing up for the class, I proved to myself that my fear based thoughts were just a myth and now it’s something I truly treasure.
#4 Buy clothes that make you feel good.
This one is a little materialistic but (I hope) we all know how confident we feel when we are rocking an outfit. Try on your clothes at home and notice how each piece makes you feel. If you don’t feel confident in them, it may be time to let them go.
Invest in yourself, you deserve to feel good on the outside too! I have a few dresses in my wardrobe that make me feel super confident and happy which shows in how I carry myself.
#5 Affirm yourself.
Believe in yourself. Rather than putting yourself down, challenge yourself to say one thing you like about yourself each day. I like doing this as soon as I wake up because I start the day feeling good about myself. It gives me a confidence boost from the moment I wake up and I try to keep that feeling throughout the day.
You are worthy of loving yourself. You are enough just as you are. You deserve to be at peace with who you are rather than wasting precious energy not liking who you are or the way you like.
Be kind to yourself. Another tip is to accept a compliment without any deflection. It may not even be a habit that you’re conscious of but the next time you receive a compliment, try to catch yourself if you are about to deflect. Say thank you and accept the compliment. You don’t need to deflect it, own it.
