5 Surprising Benefits Of Getting A Massage.

I used to think that massages were over indulgent and expensive. That was until I got my first massage and I was hooked.

There are many benefits of getting a regular massage including: a reduction in stress, muscle tension and improving circulation. However, there are some other surprising benefits that I’d like to share with you.

Benefit #1: You learn where and how you carry tension.

Before I started getting regular massages, I didn’t notice where or how much tension I was holding in my body. In particular, my neck and shoulders. I was blissfully unaware of how my body was holding onto stress. By getting a massage either as a one off or more frequently, you can begin to understand what triggers tension, where your tension points are and how to relieve it.

Benefit #2: You become less self-conscious.

Typically, if you are booked in for a full body massage, you’ll be asked to strip down to just your underwear. There are towels placed over you but it still means allowing another person to see parts of your body that you may not be comfortable with showing off. Massages allow you to get comfortable with your body and embrace yourself with a little more kindness.

Benefit #3: You can practice mindfulness and being present.

Depending on the day, you may find yourself falling asleep, in a deep state of relaxation or feeling calm as you allow the masseuse to work their magic. As the tension is removed from your body, you feel lighter and calmer. Getting a massage also gives you an opportunity to disconnect from everyone else and have a moment for yourself. You can’t be on the table responding to messages, taking phone calls or doing work, your soul purpose in that moment is to relax and unwind. You can be alone with your thoughts and just be.

Benefit #4: You feel rejuvenated after.

You are not the same person walking out of the spa as you were going in. Your energy will shift thanks to the massage. As a point of reference, I often get a massage after a stressful week and when I walk out, I feel lighter, have clarity and a sense of calm surrounding me. It’s a grounding experience and it’s an opportunity to free your mind and body of stress. It’s a chance to let go.

Benefit #5: You block out the white noise.

You can tune out the rest of the world for a short while when you’re getting a massage. Depending on where you go, you may have the option to request minimal talking. If that’s your preference, you can just be in the moment and listen to the soothing music. It gives you a chance to quieten the white noise and focus on your thoughts. Bonus Benefit: You’ve practiced self-care.

This one is a little more obvious but I feel that it’s an important one. So often, we put others before ourselves and we feel guilty when we take time to do something ‘self-indulgent’ or just for us. By going for a massage, you are giving yourself an opportunity to do something just for you but you also are giving back to your loved ones. When you hold onto stress and tension, your energy levels may be lower. After a massage, you feel renewed and you can carry this energy into conversations and interactions with others.
